The Aim of Our Charity Shop
Gaenor Markwick welcomes a new customer
Apart from the most obvious reason of raising vital funds to support the services that Headway provides, our new shop will also raise awareness of Headway and of the many people in the local area who are living with the long term effects of a brain injury.
In order to continue to provide our service we need to find many thousands of pounds each year and our shop will go towards providing much needed funds.

A few days before Christmas we opened the doors to our first charity shop, situated in Cosham High Street.
We’ve spent many weeks gathering donations from our supporters, high-street retailers and local businesses and now our very first charity shop has finally opened its doors!
The shop promptly filled with shoppers eager to get their hands on pre Christmas bargains and hand in their own donations in order to raise funds to support the service we provide for adults with brain injury, their carers and family members.

I volunteered at Headway because I wanted to become an Occupational Therapist and needed relevant experience. I’d been told by the college that Headway was looking for volunteers so I contacted them and somewhat nervously attended an ‘interview’. My husband, Alun had a stroke on 11th August 1997. He was 34 years of age, fit, healthy and never drank or smoked. He played lots of sport. It was a complete shock to everyone – especially me. We had just celebrated our 2nd Wedding Anniversary, and overnight the man I married was gone.

I was an undergraduate at Imperial from 1987 to 1990 studying chemistry. I went on to do a PhD under Dr Ed Smith.
In 1992, my final year, I was in a cycle accident while I was on my way to work, when a lorry jumped two sets of red traffic lights. It left me with a very severe head injury resulting in two years hospitalisation and many years of rehabilitation.
